ABSTRACT: This bulletin discusses the importance of innovation for staying competitive, some roles that technology plays in innovation efforts, and targeted initiatives for strategy development and actions across the enterprise and the extended enterprise to drive innovation. Businesses should never miss an opportunity to enlist the capabilities of IT to drive and support innovation. Capabilities that complement and add strength to the innovation effort must be managed and folded effectively into those efforts. In addition, there needs to be a system, or protocol, to move innovations to a point where the value can be realized. The innovation efforts should span the entire enterprise, evolving over time to become an "extended" R&D initiative. The efforts should capitalize on cross-functional business networks and flexible organization structures for collaboration and provide access to practices, competencies, and technologies that advance the innovation goal.
