NetScreen: Response to firewall RFP

Today's breaking news
Send to a friendFeedback

Executive Summary

NetScreen is pleased to have the opportunity to submit a proposal in response to Happy Pharmaceuticals RFP. First, we'd like to give you an overview of NetScreen and then go into the details of how NetScreen, once deployed, will meet and exceed Happy Pharmaceuticals requirements.

Overview

NetScreen Technologies is a leading provider of integrated security solutions for enterprise and service providers. NetScreen has set a new standard in security solutions by integrating firewall, virtual private networking (VPN) and bandwidth management (Qos) functionality all in one dedicated hardware appliance that delivers unprecedented performance.

NetScreen's patent-pending architecture eliminates the performance barrier traditionally imposed by firewalls on encrypted data, while still implementing the highest level of IP Security (IPSec) compliant security. The advanced system-level design allows the product to provide more powerful features while delivering unmatched performance.

NetScreen's products are based on a secure packet processor - an innovative design that includes a custom-designed ASIC for encrypting and screening, high-performance multi-bus architecture, embedded high-speed RISC CPU and dedicated software.

NetScreen's firewall ASIC processes the access-policy algorithms through hardware - a significantly faster approach than using software and one that frees the CPU to manage data flow. The access policies are required to perform the firewall screening and the VPN data encryption standard (DES) encryption/decryption functions. NetScreen's integrated security solution is based on purpose-built hardware and software, which eliminates the overhead of extra platform layers, floppy controllers and drivers, all of which degrade performance in PC-based solutions.

Because of its hardware-based design, NetScreen is the optimum security solution for the high-performance requirements and other demanding needs of high-bandwidth enterprise networks. The performance of NetScreen's products allows users to fully benefit from the higher speeds offered by multiple T-1 lines and ever-higher bandwidth solutions, such as T-3.

Recommendation

The NetScreen family of products consists of the NetScreen-10 and NetScreen-100. The NetScreen appliance is a self-contained unit measuring only 1U high. It has no commercial operating system to patch or update, has no internal disk storage to fail and contains all the features of very expensive firewall and VPN solutions in an affordable, easy-to-use package.

High Availability

The NetScreen-100 has the capability to support a hot standby unit. This redundant configuration provides 99.99% availability. This option can be provided for both units at the main site insuring that Internet access is always available, meeting Happy Pharmaceuticals' 'four nines' availability requirements.

Performance

The NetScreen family of products achieves wire-speed performance making it possible to handle Happy Pharmaceuticals' high-speed traffic. Implementation of NAT has no affect on performance. NetScreen's ASIC-based security provides for the highest bandwidth throughput and number of sessions. The NetScreen-100 can support over 60,000 concurrent connections.

Central Management

To address Happy Pharmaceuticals' centralized management concerns, the NetScreen family of products can be managed from a central location. Remote administration can be done securely from leading Internet web browsers. From one computer, an administrator can configure NetScreen devices, set security policies, store configurations and monitor each device. NetScreen products also support e-mail alerts that can be used to trigger paging services.

Logging

NetScreen's family of products support WebTrends for Firewalls, the leading log analysis tool. WebTrends for Firewalls and VPNs manages, monitors, and reports on firewall activity - in real time - so Happy Pharmaceuticals can react to and understand the impact on security and network traffic. It supports leading firewall and proxy servers, and offers the comprehensive reports, robustness, and usability that WebTrends' products are famous for.

Pricing

The following quote includes costs for Happy Pharmaceuticals' central site as well as the two regional sites they will be upgrading to:

Central Site
Requires one NetScreen-100 to serve as a firewall in front of each router.

A second NetScreen-100 is required to serve as a hot spare for each main firewall.

 NetScreen-100 x2 $9,995 $19,990

Redundancy
 NetScreen-100 x 2 $9,995 $19,990

Regional Site 1
