We tested the Beta 3 version of Altiris' new RapidInstall 1.2. Altiris is striving for simplicity with its RapidInstall product by limiting the tweaking options.
RapidInstall itself was easy to install, but it lacks the application and client control of the competition. No client software is required, but that means Altiris must use .exe files. For security, passwords may be embedded into the application distribution e-mail. RapidInstall captures application files into Rapid Install Packages. The capture process was easy and gave us chances to painlessly add, change or delete files. RapidInstall's compression capabilities were almost as good as those of 20/20 Software's AutoInstall 1.1, and RapidInstall distributes undo files to clients the same way AutoInstall does. Living up to its name, RapidInstall installed NetObjects' Fusion in record time. However, we hit a rough spot installing Network Associates' VirusScan, which wouldn't install directly even after several attempts. This may have been due to a beta problem, but everything else looks polished and ready to roll. RapidInstall 1.2 betaAltiris
