Company: TippingPoint
If any company has pushed its way to the head of the IPS pack, it’s TippingPoint, a division of 3Com. With this network security tool, TippingPoint has demonstrated that it really does understand the needs of a serious security manager who wants maximum power from their IPS, with a minimal amount of wasted time and effort.
It combines a long feature list with a strong management interface to drive it. While the ease of use means that you don’t have to be security guru to get value out of the TippingPoint 5000E. What you do need is a nice fat budget. The TippingPoint box we tested comes in at a cool $170,000 — plus another $10,000 for the management station. It’s good, but it’s expensive.
The TippingPoint 5000E earned bragging rights by posting the highest forwarding rate of any system tested. That was in tests with four port pairs, and the 5000E also achieved high rates in tests with one and two port pairs. But latency was higher than other systems, and there was some leakage of attack traffic in some test cases.
