Editor's note: This is a summary of our testing of this product, for a full rundown of how it fared in our testing across 10 UTM categories, please see our full coverage.

Efficient power usage is the biggest differentiator between the Siemens HiPath and other enterprise 802.11n systems. The HiPath 3620 AP was far and away the greenest system we tested, and it was a strong performer in 802.11n downlink tests.

In other tests, however, the results were not as strong. When we tried measuring 802.11n and mixed-mode throughput with short- and medium-length frames, the HiPath access point became unresponsive or even rebooted. Siemens says that disabling a watchdog timer would have prevented this behavior, but becasue that's not something that's ordinarily done in customer networks, we didn't test the access point that way.

The HiPath wireless group was going through organizational changes at press time. Enterasys owner Gores Group and Siemens formed a joint venture to buy Siemens data networking business earlier this year, including the WLAN company that began life as Chantry Networks. Going forward, it's likely that the access points we tested will be sold by Enterasys and may even acquire a common look and feel with other Enterasys products.

Score: 3.7 out of 5
