Printing 35mm slide scans

When you scan and reprint photographs, chances are you'll retain their original size or only make modest adjustments. But when you scan, or order high resolution scans, of 35mm slides and negatives, you'll need to greatly enlarge that inch-high square to create a more a useful print size. The typical scanning resolution for a slide is a large 4000 ppi. This high number is required to capture all the fine detail packed into the small original media.

Digital photo frames are hot products this season, as more and more consumers look for ways to free their growing photo collections from the computer. But why settle for a mere frame, when you could have a printer, too?

The Lexmark Platinum Pro905 color inkjet multifunction printer is a well-equipped, competent small-office MFP with a twist: Users can access and view Web-based applications on its large, touchscreen LCD. Though few applications are currently available, the concept has potential. Comparisons to the HP Photosmart Premium Touchsmart Web All-in-One Printer are inevitable, but HP places a greater emphasis on prefabricated apps for consumers, while Lexmark expects its business users to build their own. Both MFPs are pricey, costing $400 at this writing (10/30/09).
