Sensationalist and Poor JournalismBy Anonymous on May 14, 2008, 1:46 amHaving a keyboard, especially a full QWERTY is considered a major must have feature in the enterprise space. The author has obviously no clue what he is talking abt, and is totally biased. Sad to see such a poor article appearing in NetworkWorld.com
So...By Anonymous on July 7, 2008, 2:44 pmSo in conclusion to other comments: the author missed the mark on what he should be writing, the iphone is not the older brother to which all of these "unoriginal" touch phones are copy cat younger brothers. i am coming up on using a nokia 1110 for 2 years. its a phone... that does only what a phone needs to do. Its stand out features include : A flashlight, strong enough to be used as a hacky sack, keypad that continually fall of. why did i choose to use such a phone? because there is so much unnecessary content in phones these days, that the need for having a practical phone is lost. i enjoy putting the hours into learning how to use things. but phones seem to be a bit harder, im not bothered with learning how to use a completely new OS (that's basically for every different phone you buy) on something that i consider to be purely a practical "thing". the thing about apple is that design to facilitate for ppl who are not bothered with wasting their time on learning a new os that is not even logical. the iphone is fail, it is not practical (lack of speed/gps/3rd party support/etc) as far as my knowledge goes. it is how ever, a great idea to bring an simple usable system that ppl are already familiar with to a phone. despite its misgivings, it is a very nice phone. But the iphone 2.0 is going to blow every competitor out of the water. i posted this a lot later than the other posts, so it is possible that previous comments would be different if they knew of iphone 2.0's treats. if you dont know you SHOULD know very soon. Living in New Zealand, I cant wait for both the iphone to get here and for the money to pay for it. it will be my first apple product.
It's about the software.By Anonymous on April 11, 2008, 9:18 amNone of these phone designers seem to get that the thing that makes the iPhone great is not it's features, it's the software. And they all suck at it.
What they missed - 3rd generation TouchBy Anonymous on April 10, 2008, 11:35 amWhat no one is talking about is the third generation of HTC's Touch - called the Cruise. The first 'Touch' was follwed by a 'Touch Dual' which was then followed by the 'Touch Cruise'. Already available in Europe and Asia, it is officially sold in the US with a 1 year warranty. It is by far the handset significantly better than the iPhone. Why: here's why - unlocked GSM (use with any network), Windows Mobile 6, 3MP camera, 2nd VGA camera in the front for Video Conferencing, 3G, HSDPA, full touch screen with 5 different on-screen keyboard options to suit every user, built in GPS with TomTom's turn-by-turn navigation software. This far exceeds anything what the iPhone has to offer. Downside? Expensive - $800. Why? because its offered without a contract. For a few people like me, that's actually preferable. But for the purpose of this article, it is by far the best hardware/ software beater to the iPhone. Not an iPhone killer but a significantly better model. www.htc.com
NO.. and neither did anyoneBy Anonymous on April 7, 2008, 6:57 pmNO.. and neither did anyone else. Do you see the point?
iPhone is really a joke!By Anonymous on April 4, 2008, 2:46 pmDid any applehead ever hear of a T-Mobile's MDA III? HTC released it the mid 2004. Large touch screen, wifi, gsm quad band, bluetooth, thumb slide keyboard, lots of third party programs, fax, email, factory unlocked...even a removeable battery plus alot more. Remarkable! Is Apple ignorant? HTC is the true leader in this technology and proves it by their popularity and sales.
Marketing, marketing, marketing...By Anonymous on April 4, 2008, 10:29 am...just what Apple is all about - all style and no substance! Why do I hate the iPhone, 'cos it's just crap as a business tool. No 3G, no interchangeable battery, a ridiculous tarrif, and an overpriced gadget that won't perform any where near as effectively as my existing phone. The OS is hardly 'open' either! This article is so biased and badly researched that it doesn't really warrant commenting on, but....you can't let this dork get away with such rubbish. Firstly, as has already been commented on, the iPhone was certainly not the first to have a touch interface, it has undoubtedly raised the bar for other manufacturers in terms of UI other than that, it has been late to market, with a lack of feature richness that us europeans are now used to. Back to the marketing debate - what Apple have been really slick at. To say that the keyboard is a relic is simply untrue, a business user won't adopt to the touch interface, like they will a full QWERTY keyboard - done deal! Thankfully, sales in the UK and europe are slack, there's much better gadgets out there fulfilling most individuals requirements, that are given 'free' with whatever operator tariff you choose. Not everything that Apple turns it's hand to is a success by the way, so expect the iPhone to peak fairly soon and hopefully fade away!
bad articleBy Anonymous on April 4, 2008, 4:56 ami can't beleive you call yourself journalists, some of those phone you used in the slide show are clearly renders, others don't have their final look and release date yet. journalism is about facts. you are clearly very biased. and news flash iphone IS NOT the first touchscreen phone. htc phones you called "knockoff" are here much longer than i phone.
So Out of TouchBy Anonymous on April 4, 2008, 3:05 amAll you have to do is some research on Japan. iPhone has no success over there. Why? Because NO KEYBOARD. The Japanese text rings around the U.S. with just their thumb, not even looking at the keypad. Do that with an iPhone? Don't think so. Sloppy, sloppy reporting...
iPhone in JapanBy Anonymous on April 4, 2008, 6:43 am>iPhone has no success over there. Why? Because NO KEYBOARD. Err no... Because it hasn't been launched here yet.
I totally expect a lot ofBy Anonymous on April 4, 2008, 2:38 am I totally expect a lot of uneducated "non technical" news sources to think the iPhone to be the first device with a touch screen and everyone else is copying it but for a number of these devices have been out way before the release of the iPhone and most are new generations of previous versions that have been out years before the iPhone. Why does everyone think the iPhone is so revolutionary, it hasn't brought anything knew except for multitouch and has features found in first gen versions of some of the phones displayed that were out years ago. ie. No GPS, No 3G, Limited Bluetooth.... Though I still think they did an excellent job with their first product in a new market and they do have the best UI/Touch Screen but by no means are these devices clones like the title of the article suggests most of these companies have had touch phones for 4-5 years, I've been using them for that long!
The LG Shine was releasedBy Anonymous on April 4, 2008, 12:33 amThe LG Shine was released just before the iPhone. It's a chick phone with a mirror screen. Do better research next time.
Innacurate ArticleBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 9:00 pmYour description of the Meizu M8 is completely inaccurate. How about checking your sources before you just decide to make some shit up? Crappy internet journalism at it's worst here!
Who ever wrote this articleBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 8:04 pmWho ever wrote this article is an idiot.
Not the only nor the first thingBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 7:52 pmWhile its a pretty device, don't forget Apple tends to graphic design and users alike. Lets start with the QWERTY thing... Somebody already pointed it out: It HAS a software touch-QWERTY keyboard, which by the way is really hard to deal with (fingers are too big, and consider I'm pretty thin). For most of us, used to write in laptops and use command-line shells and tools, a poor keypad is a great disadvantage. While Apple has innovated with great functions & design, that doesn't mean they're pioneers. Touchscreen is nothing of this century, phones with MP3 players are also something already invented, apps within a portable device is from the XX century too (remember something called PDA?). So please, be objective and try to be more informed before making stats.
Clearly the Voyager is aBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 7:50 pmClearly the Voyager is a copy of the iPhone, it couldn't of possibly have been based off of the LG Prada which was around before the iPhone.
Meizu has no phone yetBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 7:41 pmYou do realize how horribly wrong you are regarding the Meizu miniOne, right? It's not even out yet. Nobody but Meizu knows what the current state is. Hell, even the gui isn't complete yet. Apart from that, the features it will have are plenty full. It will be a full featured phone, music player and all. This 'journalist' needs to find a new job. And the magazine shouldn't just accept his words for truth.
incorrect info!!!By Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 7:33 pmthe meizu m8 minione is not out and is not just a cheap iphone ripoff but a full featured phone based on win ce6 developed in conjuction with microsoft. get your facts in order and make a correction to this article and apoligize to meizu for slandering their product. go to www.meizume.com for more info on this great phone and other great meizu products and you will see that this is not just a ripoff
Sounds like someone is aBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 7:15 pmSounds like someone is a little bitter they don't have an iPhone..... PS. Not everyone is an Apple Fanatic, you know, maybe they just make a quality product Oo
LG ShineBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 6:12 pmLook for the release dates of LG Shine and iPhone, and then tell who's copying who, same is true for other smartphones-like HTC. From the different point of view, some can say that apple is copying them. I have the impression that now everything that touchscreen must be a clone of iphone.
Author has missed the whole point of a keypadBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 6:01 pmA keypad on a cellphone is good because it provides tactile feedback - I can have my eyes closed and phone someone from my old-style key-based phone. While a touch interface is indeed great, it is also quite pointless when the phone will be in my pocket bumping into things. Plus, it makes it waaaaaaaaaaay easier to type in any words (especially with the T9 assited modes on most cellphones) that a tiny screen and a tinier qwerty keypad can ever accomplish. I think Maddox summed it up best: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone
Unbelievably poorly informed bad journalism.By Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 6:39 pmthis article is actually shocking. I have never heard such subjective, poorly written, missinformed bull***t journalism in my whole life. Get your head out of apples ass for a second and start to think about what you are talking about. For a start meizu's M8 phone is not out yet and won't be released until august, where do you get your info? Secondly how are either of those HTC touch phones iphone clones? Htc are the biggest smartphone manafacturer in the world they have been making touchscreen smart phones for years before the iphone was even thought of. Also how is the Lg prada (or follow up models based on the same tech) an iphone clone? it came out before the iphone!. And what have regular handsets like the he LG Shine got to do with the iphone? that looks nothing like the iphone, it doesn't even have a touch screen! those keys are solid. You are so unbelieably full of shit it's actually scary that you have been authorised to spill your missinformed rubbish to the public at large. You have literelly been sucked in by apples hype machine and had your brain washed agressivly. Next your gonna tell me apple invented the touchscreen. Get a grip and learn how to write accurate well informed articles and learn about the difference between cheap chinese iphone clones and high end smart phones made by some of the worlds biggest and most well established and respected cell phone manafacturers. You actually seem to have no concept of what the word 'clone' means and it's implications.
Never understood why anyoneBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 5:27 pmNever understood why anyone would be a Phone Fanboy. It's just a hunk of hardware, folks. I used an iPhone, and I've used a Voyager. The iPhone is clearly better in every respect... EXCEPT the keyboard. So why in heaven's name would anyone fault the Voyager for the one thing that it's actually better at than an iPhone? It just boggles the mind...
iPhone bashingBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 5:21 pmI think that lots of folks bashing the iPhone have never seen one in action. There's a big difference between how ALL phones have been operating, and the iPhone -- the user interface is not just pretty pictures and eye-candy, it actually works. Yes, my Palm 700wx has a touch screen. Yes I can put third-party applications on it. Yes it has a camera. But the people who designed Windows Mobile have no idea how to do a user interface, and should be fired and barred from the industry. A phone is no place for a desktop operating environment. Marking an incoming message as read requires 5 or 6 clicks. I do wonder if an iPhone is usable while driving a stick in bumper-to-bumper traffic -- this is a good test of user-interface. The Treo is not. My Nokia 3650 is not.
Hi there, just wanted toBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 5:14 pmHi there, just wanted to point out that the Prada phone was released 3 months before the iPhone and therefore quite possibly not a knock off.
Edge? Edge of what???By Anonymous on April 4, 2008, 6:58 amI think ATT is a large sponsor of N*world. So it shouldn't surprise anyone that the drivel they put out here would even embarrass your average Apple fanboy. Those of you considering moving to th iP* will soon find out why ATT calls it their "Edge Network" ...because it's on the edge of what you're likely to put up with for it's s-l-o-w-n-e-s-s! Guess what? The network DOES matter! And if you compare the entire package of phone & network in a fair "apples" to (uh...,) "not apple" showdown. Once you get past the cool flick your finger features on the iP* you'll find the network it runs on extremely lacking. ...and ATT advertizing never ceases to push the limits of truth. "Best Coverage"??? *world-wide
Obviously a clear bias toBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:57 pmObviously a clear bias to the author against a smart phone having actual productivity as a measure of its usefulness. Anyone who's tries to type more than a ten word message on an Iphone or an HTC touch understands the requirements for a tactile keyboard - is QWERTY the answer, perhaps not, but current touch screen only devices, Iphone or otherwise become far more productive with the addition of a keyboard.
how about text only?By Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:52 pmpersonally, I find a GUI very difficult to use on a little device - part of it is legibility - if you can't focus clearly on the device (becaue your reading glasses are not in place) all the icons look alike - What I need from a phone is simple - place a call, receive a call, have a loud enough ring that I can hear it, have aclear enough display of the incoming number/ID that I can read it, save contact info and notes, and tell me what time it is. Oh, and I want it rugged and safe to use. A camera is NOT a plus, a touch screen is a definite minus - it will quickly get destroyed by the keys and other stuff in my pocket - if I want to listen to music, I will use a radio, not a phone (or an ipod, or ...) I have yet to figure out how to disable all the stupid graphics on my phone, but I've gotten it down to a minimum - and I don't need a color display, just nice high contrast monochrome. so far, I've seen nothing on an iPhone that rises above the level of anoying - now an iPod interface might be good, but it would be really hard to dial numbers....
Sounds like you should notBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 5:04 pmSounds like you should not be looking at any "smart phone". I think Motorola makes a phone for old people with big buttons and large text. Probably more your speed.
multi-touch not touchBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:49 pmI think a big point overlooked here is that the iphone is all about multi-touch and the other wizardry. It isn't the first touch screen phone. It is, however, the first touch screen phone with multi touch, a full browser, auto gyros etc.
QWERTY?By Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:48 pmDoes the person writing the article have any idea what a QWERTY keyboard is? Here's a hint: having physical buttons does not make something a QWERTY keyboard. Here's another hint: the iPhone DOES have a QWERTY keyboard. QWERTY purely refers to the key layout -- if it has a standard computer/typewriter key layout with the letters Q, W, E, R, T, and Y in the upper left (like the iPhone's soft keyboard), it's a QWERTY keyboard.
Terrible article. ThisBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:47 pmTerrible article. This author should not be reviewing technology he is not up to date on. The biggest factor for me not getting an iphone is the keyboard, which for some reason the author thinks is its greatest advantage.
the attack of the clonesBy mwkingsandiego on April 3, 2008, 4:35 pmI think the impact is obvious from this little slide show - every and their brother is working on an iPhony (I think I even saw one from AT&T), IN SPITE of the techno-journalists who all pronounced the iPhone as doomed to failure. Have we heard from them lately? That said, Apple has clearly changed the landscape and we'll never again be satisfied with cryptic, unmarked key combinations and a postage-stamp size screen for anything more than a phone call - a phone really isn't just a phone, is it? Personally, I can't wait for my Verizon/Razr contract to run out (and iPhone 2 to arrive) so I can convert. I think the AT&T contract will cost less than I'm paying Verizon too.
Wait a secBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:36 pmLG's Prada came out before the iPhone did. Ironically, all of these phones are actually Prada clones (including the iphone)
iphone clonesBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:29 pmthat's just ridiculous. are they really stealing apples icon designs, layout and wallpapers?
give me a break...By Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:27 pmGet Apple from up your butt. They didn't invent any of this stuff. Remember ATMs have used touch screens for decades before the iphone. Digital Music players existed back when apple had to bed money for Bill Gates to keep it's head above water (And lets not even talk about things like the walkman). Querty is really a problem for the iphone and a major reason most business people will never get it. 3g is useful if you want to really use your phone for making phone calls, replaciable batteries are great if you keep you phone for more than a year or just want an emergency backup. GPS helps if you want to get somewhere in a remote location (Navigation on the Iphone only works if you can find more than 3 cell towers. Try that 25 miles off the coast or in death valley. GPS only works if you can find 3 sats in other words you are not inside) To be honest the Iphone is OK at best, the bashes the author keeps going on about Querty, GPS, batteries, 3G, etc are all really good reasons to not get an iphone and why these phones are often a better buy. The author here has either an Apple fan boy trying to play like he is not, or has so little connection with RL that he doesn't see the faults in the phone. (IE the iphone is perfect if you never leave you new york/LA appartment where it's always plugged into power and your ibook)
WHy do you say "can't seemBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 5:15 pmWHy do you say "can't seem to let go of a keyboard" having no buttons isn't necessarily a good thing - you can't operate your phone without looking directly at it and you don't always want to have to fumble with a touchscreen. get out of apples butt already.
Awful article - what a joke,By Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:25 pmAwful article - what a joke, all of these are iphone clones? I don't get it, i've had a touchscreen smart-phone for at least 2 years before the iphone even existed. Enough with this rediculous mac fan-boy crap - it's just warn out...
Samsung One-ups Apple, IMHOBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:24 pmThe Samsung design offered by Sprint appears to be the only offering here which is playing on the same field as the iPhone, and manages to one-up the iPhone with its feature set, providing GPS navigation, faster Internet connectivity and third-party application development support.
brainwashedBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:11 pmThe iPhone brainwashing is complete. Apple has now invented the touchscreen phone and music player and all the years of devices that came before no longer even exist. Apparently even slider phones and hardware keyboard phones are iPhone clones too. Amazing what passes as journalism.
What's wrong with QWERTY?By Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 4:02 pmHow come the author knocks QWERTY so much? I'm sure the touch interface is great and wonderful, but if I'm going to use the thing for WORK, I need a keypad to type stuff sometimes. But, I guess, since the IPhone wasn't really designed for business users, it makes sense.
I don't understand thisBy Anonymous on April 25, 2008, 11:31 amI don't understand this either. I have two friends who have the iPhone and have played with their phones extensively, and the one thing I don't like about them is the virtual keyboard. I find it very hard to type on the iPhone. And this is coming from an Apple fanboy who only uses Macs. But I don't think I would want to own an iPhone because of the lack of a real qwerty keyboard. I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there who feel the same way so marking down a product that offers this feature rather feels like you're looking down your nose at those of us who prefer it.
iPhone versus the worldBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 3:56 pmIt assumes a lot to say that the iPhone is the 100% gold standard. I have owned an iPhone, a Blackberry Curve, and a Voyager, and I find the Voyager FAR superior. The iPhone handles music better, but isn’t expandable like the other two, and I am too much of a music junkie to restrict myself to iPhone's storage limits. The big issue I have is with your thought that on-screen keys are the way to go. Absolutely not! The touch screen is hard to learn, and even once learned is sometimes overly or under sensitive. I far prefer my large, clicky buttons under the screen of the Voyager. I won’t buy a device with purely virtual buttons again. Also, when using the touch screen for navigation, the Voyager wins with its tactile feedback. All-in-all, I'll agree with CNET and rank my Voyager higher than the iPhone. Tell Apple to catch up with their competitors, not vice versa.

This writer lost allBy Anonymous on April 3, 2008, 3:47 pmThis writer lost all credibility with me when he said "the Prada - itself an iPhone knockoff" The Prada was announced before and went to market before the iPhone.
