Ham radio has been shown very publically, especially in times of emergency. I have seen numerous articles and TV interviews on the subject. Unfortunately, many people either tune it out, or change the channel. Ham radio is very current, with digital technology evolving every day. I would invited "anonymous" to contact a local ham radio operator and have him to show him what he does. I think he would find it very facinating, and he knows, he may decide to get a license. It's easier that ever before and the hobby can always use some more good operators. Yes,I'm biased, I've been a ham radio operator for over 30 years and have been involved in countless emergencies.
