They were so afraid that the users wouldn't park the hard disk heads before turning them off, that they designed the power down sequence to be software controlled. Unfortunately, the bloody thing would frequently lock up, and no matter how much you pushed the power button the thing wouldn't power off unless you pulled the plug. I used to make jokes that they'd eventually offer a downgrade kit for the Lisa (after they introduced "The Fat Mac "- the 512K version that would essentially turn the Lisa into a Mac, and they'd call it "The Obese Mac". Guess what - They did! Except they called it something else. Then, they had a run of Apple IIIc power supplies (that was the little portable) that would turn themselves on randomly after they had been powered down, and blow the motherboard. So, Apple not only invented the first computer that wouldn't shut down unless it really wanted to, they invented the first computer that would turn itself on!

All large companies have their share of stinkers. One is more notable than the others considering their flagship product is rife with security issues. Not necessary to mention any names.

Eventually both Lisa systems were upgraded to Mac XL with the addition of a Hard disk, 3 1/2 inch floppy and new board.

Completely agreeBy Anonymous on August 18, 2009, 11:43 ami love my apple tv, it doubles as my home stereo (with all 50 days worth my music stored directly on the device), it's great to have a party and anyone with an iPhone or iPod touch can vote or control the music. Wireless speakers let me listen to the music on the deck and control it with my phone. I can rent movies for the same price as cable and along with boxee/xbmc I can watch movies from any computer or the internet directly on my TV. It's absolutely amazing and has changed the way I consume media in my home. I have recommended it to non-techie family members including my parents who have purchased it and absolutely love it. i would hardly consider it a failure.

Apple One ScannerBy Anonymous on August 17, 2009, 9:15 pmI remember paying some astromomical amount (perhaps around $1200 Australian Dollars) for an Apple One Scanner, took 50 mins to scan an A4 page in greyscale.....major flop. When Apple get it right they get it spectacularly right....when they are wrong, they do it just as spectacularly.

However, it cracks me up to no end when their is an article with the smallest bad word about Apple as the fanboys come pouring out of the wild to cry and moan that someone dare utter anything but adoration. I purchased one (I think for $1100 at the time) to do remote recording. This was before ANY laptop with enough horsepower existed. It still runs today as a network backup system.

And like most advertisers, they only look at the hard hits and not the quality of content that you write. These product "disasters" are old news and have been documented repeatedly in so many publications.

Most of these "disaster" products were very good or helped to develop future products. Lisa paved the way for the Mac. Newton, despite it's flaws, was revolutionary. Apple Hi FiBy Anonymous on August 17, 2009, 12:52 pmThe Apple Hi Fi blows chunks. Surprisingly, many Apple products are not as "super dee duper awesome" as people would have you believe. But the Company has the cache of having people invest their egos, along with their money, in the brand, so you end up with people trying to defend these clear disasters because they feel they are being personally attacked. I use a mac laptop. It's OK. You can't record tv on it then take it on the road using native software, and it was expensive, but the lack of a huge installed base means that people don't write viruses for it. So that's a plus. I'll stick with MS for my home computer, though, as I like to spend money on content, not hardware. Maybe I'm just not rich enough.

PricesBy Anonymous on August 17, 2009, 12:00 pmTheir prices aren't nearly as astronomical as they used to be. Sure, you'll go broke if the one you have your eye is is a Mac Pro, but for the average computer user, the moderately Mac Mini or the $999 Macbook gives you what you need.
