Cisco, Juniper to duke it out over mobile

Jim Duffy notes that Cisco and Juniper are about to take their rivalry to Barcelona next week, at the Mobile World Congress show. Both are set to unveil new products there. He writes, "Citing its own Visual Networking Index research, Cisco says global mobile data traffic increased 160% percent over the past year, to the equivalent of 23 million DVDs.  It is growing 2.4 times faster than global fixed broadband data traffic, the company says. And many in the industry believe Cisco trumped Juniper by acquiring Starent Networks, a maker of mobile packet core gateways for transitioning 2G and 3G networks to 4G/LTE."

  • Cisco comes under more data center fire Submitted by Cisco Subnet on Fri, 02/05/2010

More shots are being fired at Cisco in the data center. BLADE Network Technologies, perhaps Cisco's closest competitor in data center switching, this week unveiled its Unified Fabric Architecture, which stresses the company's sole focus on the data center and its partnerships with server vendors.

61 CCIEs dropped out of Cisco's highly coveted cert program over the last 30 days by Brad Reese

According to Dual CCIE #18532 R&S/Security - George Morton: "Over the last 30 days we have seen CCIEs drop their highly coveted certifications at a much greater rate than net new CCIEs. "61 CCIEs dropped out of Cisco's prestigious certification program during the month of January 2010 alone. "For further clarification, let's do the math together: "New CCIEs: 54. "The number of candidates passing the CCIE Lab: 101. "Existing CCIEs earning a second CCIE or greater: 14. ... 3

A World Without Multicast by Jimmy Ray Purser

3... 2.. 1. Caffeine sequence initiated...We have lift off! I rolled my fat butt out of a warm bed on a cold Wisconsin morning to conduct a WebEx Workshop on "Designing Your Network For The NEW Video" to a group of engineers in India today. I think they were surprised when I told them that this is NOT a Multicasting workshop. So was I... Video has really taken a major turn in how we deploy it in our networks. Back in the olden days of 5 years ago, we used to say stuff like... 3

Cisco Security Quick Tip of the Week by Jamey Heary

Did you know that Cisco switches come with the ability to perform web authentication at each switch port? Most people don't realize that this feature exists in Cisco IOS so I figured it would be a good Security Quick Tip. Web authentication works by redirecting a users browser to a login page as soon as they connect to the switch port. Once they login, the switch forwards their credentials to a radius server for verification. The radius server can either store user accounts or look to... 3

The New ROUTE exam: More Difficult than the Old BSCI? by Wendell Odom

If you've watched this blog in the last few days, you will have already seen that the CCNP cert appears to have fewer topics than the old CCNP. In fact, the ROUTE exam itself even looks a little narrower at first glance - quite a trick if you consider that it's moved from a 5 day BSCI course to a 5 day ROUTE course plus 7.5 hours of e-learning. Today I'll look specifically at the new ROUTE exam, to consider how the topic breadth and depth have changed, and whether that translates into a more... 11

Security Watch:

Security advisories from Cisco and elsewhere

Cisco issues TLS advisory While everyone was distracted by the HP/3Com deal, Cisco this week quietly issued a security advisory warning of an "industry-wide" vulnerability in the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol that could impact any Cisco product that uses TLS or the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol. Cisco was still determining which products are affected at the time of this post, but had also already...
