Open Source Subnet: An independent Open Source community

Which open source API will rule the clouds?

A huge storm is brewing in the open source community over cloud computing APIs -- which will allow different clouds to talk to each other. Various factions are all trying to become the de facto standard. Those factions are Amazon, Rackspace, Cloud.com and Red Hat. In a discussion between Alan Shimel and Steve Lesem (pictured), CEO of cloud storage provider, Mezeo, this idea surfaced: the winning API will probably be some combination of them all.

Are Web Browsers Going the Way of the Dinosaur? by Stephen Spector'

In the August issue of Wired Magazine, there is an interesting article “The Web is Dead. Long Live the Internet” which looks at the issue of no longer needing a web browser to interact on the Internet. The main point of the article is that users of the Internet are moving away from the so-called wild west of the Web for the “simpler, sleeker services that just work.” For example, the massive growth of Facebook and applications found on mobile devices and tablets are independent of any web... 6

Have we reached a tipping point for cloud-based VoIP? by Amy Vernon

Some have said that the future of open source is in the middle, and the explosion of cloud-based telephony would seem to bear that out. OnSIP, Twilio, CloudVox, FreeSwitch, are all telephony platforms that have been making a splash and gaining popularity, and they're built firmly on open source. The reasons are legion; but for OnSIP, the two most important are what's most important to their customers: price and control. OnSIP, run by the New York-based Junction Networks, is a hosted business...

Burning Man is the proving point for Earth friendly, open source Linux-based cell tower by Julie Bort

This has got to be one of the coolest -- ehem, I mean hottest -- open source projects around. It is a solar/wind powered, Linux/VoIP based cell phone network, that works with any GSM phone and costs pennies on the dollar to install and operate. And it's being tested right now at Burning Man. To summarize: "The technology starts with the "they-said-it-couldn't-be-done" open source software, OpenBTS. OpenBTS is built on Linux, distributed via the AGPLv3 license and when used with a... 14

A FOSS project isn’t necessarily a software product by Stephen Walli

Confusion often reigns over how to judge free and open source software (FOSS) as people investigate using it in their businesses. Do they use Red Hat Advanced Server? Fedora? CentOS? Should they use the community edition of the Alfresco content management server or buy the product? How does one judge the “software” and whether it’s “right” for one’s business? These are all questions that confront developers and IT managers as they encounter the FOSS world.Searching for useful lists of criteria...

Brazil is open to open source by Eric Gries

I’ve been traveling quite a bit recently to meet with Lucid’s customers and partners around the globe. Earlier this week I had the pleasure of speaking at an event organized for business executives by our partner in Brazil, Primeware. The topic – no surprise – was open source enterprise search software. What I saw and heard seems to indicate the country’s broader sentiment about open source and growth.Lately, Brazil has been getting a lot of attention. In 2014, it will host the next World Cup.... 3

    Try It by Stephen Spector'

I find that many people find the idea of running an open source application something beyond their skill set or comfort level. Computer users are comfortable purchasing software either online or in stores and then installing and using the software. In this weeks blog, I am going to push you into the open source world by having you skip the most important part – paying for the software. If you follow my instructions you will have installed an easy to use open source software package without...

Microsoft: Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places by Alan Shimel

Headlines and bylines all over the web have trumpeted the fact that Microsoft loves open source. Regular readers of my blog (OK you two, you can sit back down) know that I have been saying this for a long time. Yes it is a gentler and kinder Microsoft when it comes to open source and even Linux interoperability. But the real question is will the open source community ever love Microsoft back? Sadly the answer may be not anytime soon.As the old saying goes, it takes two to tango. So while... 25

The U.K. government has just released its first contribution to the Drupal community. The CKAN module is what the folks behind Data.gov.uk developed to take all the data stored in their CKAN system and publish it on its Drupal site. For now, the code can be downloaded here. It will be released on Drupal.org soon. This code release allows content to be synched from CKAN into Drupal. CKAN is the system we use as our “back end” to store information about all the data government has released....
