Cisco's purchase of Airespace could boost the enterprise wireless LAN market, which has been struggling somewhat. Despite all the hype about WLAN switches, worldwide sales were less than $250 million in 2004, according to Synergy Research. And most of that was in specific verticals such as healthcare, retail, manufacturing and education. A combination Cisco/Airespace offering could open up WLANs to a broader audience.

That's the promise of new converged or hybrid services that will become available sooner than you think.
