Dashboards are all the rage among IT managers who want a quick way to see how the systems and processes that support the business are performing.

The technology behind dashboards has changed a lot in recent years. Instead of static views that IT managers have to manually populate with data, today's dashboards are more automated and draw data from a wider range of sources.

The metrics also have changed. Along with monitoring straight IT conditions, such as CPU usage or device availability, companies also are tracking more business-oriented conditions -- such as the percentage of IT support requests solved on the first call.
