School shortcomings

Today's technology students better bone up on business, according to many who say students aren't getting the skills they need from school. This article, which is part of a package on the IT identity crisis, highlights a program at Lehigh University and a course at the University of North Carolina Wilmington that aim to blend bytes and business.

Governmental recognition

The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) recently recognized Cisco's security courses for meeting the 4013A training standard for systems administrators responsible for the security oversight or management of critical networks. Also, the CNSS recertified that the Cisco security courseware meets the 4011 training standard for security pros in the federal government. To obtain that designation, candidates must achieve a Cisco Certified Network Associate credential and pass the SND exam, Securing Cisco Network Devices.

Confidence count

A recent report from Spherion shows that 70% of IT workers are confident about their job security. What's more, close to half of those polled in the first quarter of 2006 said they were likely to hunt for a new job. This is up 34% from the fourth quarter of 2005.

A+ update

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is overhauling its A+ certification to reflect the need for security and soft skills. "IT workers who understand how to use technology to meet business goals, and who can articulate this understanding, are golden in the eyes of employers," says Neill Hopkins, vice president of skills development for CompTIA.

Quiet down

Talking too much during a job interview is the most common mistake job candidates make, according to research from worldwide executive recruitment firm Korn/Ferry International. Other blunders cited include lack of knowledge about the company or position, over-inflated ego and appearing overly confident.

Bone up on the business

IT workers searching for work would be wise to bolster their business skills. Staffing company Robert Half Technology polled 1,400 CIOs on the importance they place on knowledge of business fundamentals such as accounting, finance and general operations. The results show that 41% of CIOs place more weight on business acumen than they did five years ago when evaluating job candidates.

If you're looking for IT employees, know that Wednesday is the best day of the week to post a job listing. EQuest, a job posting delivery service, reports that 18.1% of all viewing activity occurs on this day. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday received the least traffic, showing that perhaps many candidates surf for work when they're already on another job.

Storage certification

I'm at the Storage Networking World conference this week to learn about the latest developments in storage.

Here at the show, the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) is making a concerted effort to add to its certification ranks. Wayne Adams, chairman of the board of directors for SNIA, says the goal is to get 50 to 75 folks certified in the SNIA Storage Networking Certification Program (SNIA SNCP) by the end of the conference.

No foolin:

April Fool's Day falls on a Saturday this year, meaning most workplaces will be spared from pranks. Among the hijinks cited in staffing firm Accountemps' poll of April Fool's jokes in the office, most had to do with altering a colleague's office. Jokes included changing the keys on a keyboard, filling an office with balloons, turning everything backwards, loading an office with sand and beach toys, and covering a cube with plastic wrap.

New cert

Today marks the launch of the Computing Technology Industry Association CompTIA RFID+ certification. Available worldwide as of March 28, the vendor-neutral certification is intended to validate the skills of critical to RFID implementation. Exam content includes installation, configuration and maintenance of RFID hardware and software, site surveys and site analysis, and tag selection, placement and testing.
