802.11g speeds on 802.11b equipment?

By Keith Shaw, NetworkWorld.com, 04/23/03

U.S. Robotics today announced a new firmware upgrade to its existing 802.11b 22Mbps wireless networking products that it says will be able to provide the same kind of speeds as the pre-standard 802.11g equipment.

USrobotics22xx-fam-hi-sm.jpgThe new 54Mbps Xlerator Technology is available as a free download (firmware upgrade and driver update) from this Web site.

The company says the optimization of software and updated client software helps achieve the new speeds. It is based on 802.11b silicon chip technology from Texas Instruments, U.S. Robotics said. The new upgrade also offers 256-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) support.

The new upgrade is available now on the following U.S. Robotics equipment:

  • USR2249, the U.S. Robotics 22 Mbps Wireless Access Point.
  • USR2210, the U.S. Robotics 22 Mbps Wireless PC Card for laptops.
  • USR2216, the U.S. Robotics 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter for desktops.

The upgrade for the USR8022, the U.S. Robotics 22 Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Router, will be available in May 2003. The USR8022 includes a two-port Ethernet switch, integrated access point, router and integrated print server.
