By Keith Shaw, NetworkWorld.com, 02/24/05

As part of its "Mobile Entertainment Strategy," Dell today launched two new notebooks, a music player and portable projector aimed at "gamers, music enthusiasts and multimedia buffs."

Dell-DJ30-sm.jpgProducts launched include the following: (click links to bring up large pictures)

  • Inspiron XPS Gen 2, a gaming notebook that includes a 17-inch widescreen display, the NVIDIA 256M-byte GeForce Go 6800 Ultra graphics card, Windows Media Center Edition 2005, and dedicated support queue for XPS customers and a graphics upgrade path (Dell says it will provide optional upgrade if a new graphics card is introduced. The notebook starts at $2,749 and weighs 8.6 pounds (definitely not a thin and light). More details are at the Inspiron XPS Web site.

  • Dell Inspiron 9300, a 17-inch widescreen notebook that supports XGA+ or UXGA resolution, includes front-and-center navigation keys that give users quick access to their multimedia content, Windows Media Center Edition2 005 and a USB 2.0 TV tuner, and a 64M-byte graphics card with the ability to upgrade to 256M-bytes. Other features include multiple ports (support for DVI, S-Video, IEEE 1394 and up to six USB slots), Intel Pentium M processors up to 2.1 GHz, and dual-channel 533 MHz DDR2 memory up to 2G-bytes. The systems start at $1,599, and weigh 7.85 pounds. More details are at the Inspiron Web site.

  • The Dell Digital Jukebox 30GB3 (aka Dell DJ 30), a music player that can hold up to 15,000 songs in the MP3 or Windows Media Audio format. The player supports Windows Media DRM 10 technology, so users can subscribe to an online music service (such as Napster to Go), or put songs they already own onto the device. The device starts at $299 and includes up to 12 hours of battery life. More details are available at the Dell DJ Web site.

  • The Dell 1100MP projector, coming on March 15. The $849 projector has a 1,400-lumen brightness, 2,100:1 contrast ratio and weighs 4.85 pounds for portability. The DLP projector also includes S-Video and Composite video support, pre-set and customizable video mode, and an auto-synchronization feature that adjusts the output resolution to match that of the input device (up to SXGA+, 1,400 by 1,050 pixels). More details available at the 1100MP Web site.
