Device doubles as Wi-Fi detector, adapter

Hawking Technologies today launched a Wi-Fi network detection device that also doubles as a USB wireless adapter for notebooks and PCs.
The HWL2 WiFi Locator Professional Edition (for PCs, the HWL2A is for Macintosh systems) is a pocket-size device that includes a high-gain directional antenna and built-in 802.11g USB adapter. By having the adapter act as a detection tool, users don't need to power up their notebooks in order to find out whether a wireless signal exists, Hawking says. The device uses Hawking's Hi-Gain Antenna technology to help find the exact location of any wireless network. The company says the device can provide an increase in wireless distance of up to 300% when compared to standard wireless adapters.
The device also displays information on wireless security (whether it is WPA or WEP-enabled), as well as the specific wireless network type (802.11b or 802.11g). The device includes internal batteries that are re-charged when the device is connected to the USB port of the notebook or PC.
The PC version will cost $99 (estimated street price $79.99) and begins shipping on June 10, Hawking says. The Mac version will cost $139 (estimated street price $99) and begins shipping on June 17. More details are available at the Hawking Technologies Web site.
