NComputing expands PC access for Texas students

NComputing (DEMOfall 2006) this week announced that the Lewisville Independent School District in Texas has deployed more than 6,000 of NComputing's low-cost virtual PCs, representing the largest U.S. implementation to date of the company's technology.
The company's virtualization software taps unused capacity from existing PCs that allow multiple users to "share" the PC. Each user's monitor, keyboard and mouse are connected to a small access device, which is then connected to the shared PC. The access device has no CPU, memory or moving parts.
The school district said the deployment allows them to provide computer stations for half the price of previous methods, allowing them to put more computers into classrooms. Since shipping products less than two years ago, the company has sold more than 500,000 seats in 70 countries around the world. The company also announced that the Republic of Macedonia is deploying 160,000 NComputing virtual PCs across its entire K-12 school system.
