Canon USA has introduced its new Optura 200MC digital video (DV) camcorder, which has four different recording modes -- DV (up to 2 hours with an 80-minute MiniDV tape), 1.33 megapixel high-resolution photo (up to resolutions of 1280 by 960 pixels), Motion-JPEG and digital photo (for e-mail and Web photos). The 200MC can also be directly connected via its USB cable to certain Canon photo printers (CP10, CP100 and Bubble Jet-Direct photo printers S820D, S830D and S530D) for printing without going through a PC.
The 200MC features a 10x optical zoom and 200x digital zoom lens, optical image stabilization (to correct camera shake), and advanced dual image processing, which uses two separate processing techniques to provide different color and brightness for TV and Video monitors. In addition, it supports the new Exif Print (Exif 2.2) standard, which means exposure settings and image scene data is recorded on the memory card when the photo is being taken. Doing this provides better image quality when printing on an Exif-compatible printer, Canon says. Photos can be stored on a SecureDigital (SD) or MultiMedia Card (MMC).
The Motion-JPEG feature lets users record short video clips and attach them to e-mail. Clips are stored on the memory card and can include lengths of 10 seconds at 320 by 240 resolution, or 30 seconds at 160 by 120 resolution. Users can also capture more than 700 photos (at 640 by 480 resolution) onto a single DV cassette. Both video and digital photos can be captured on the same DV cassette, Canon says.
The 200MC will be available this month at retailers nationwide, and sells for about $1,699. Go to Canon's Web site for more details on the 200MC.
