Olympus America today announced its new CAMEDIA C-50 Zoom, an ultra-compact 5.0 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens (12x total seamless zoom when combined with the 4x digital zoom).

OlympusC50.jpgThe C-50 Zoom is Olympus' first camera to take advantage of the new xD-Picture Card. The card, about the size of a postage stamp, allows the camera to measure 3.9- by 2.3- by 1.6-inches. It weighs only 6.84 oz. and features Olympus' clamshell lens barrier.

The zoom features an equivalent zoom range of 38mm to 114mm, and features a fast shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second for action photography, Olympus says. In addition, it allows for long exposures of up to eight seconds. It has an optical viewfinder, as well as a 1.5-inch color LCD screen that shows aperture, shutter speed and image quality settings. Transferring images is handled through an Auto-Connect USB cable. Images can also be viewed on a television with the video cable. QuickTime video and audio can also be captured to create short movies, Olympus says.

The C-50 Zoom will cost about $599 (street price) and will be available in October. The camera includes the USB cable, audio/video out cable, carrying strap, a Li-B10 lithium ion battery and charger, a 32M-byte xD-Picture Card, remote control, CAMEDIA Master Software 4.0, and a user manual. Go to the Olympus Web site for more details.
