Network World Fusion, 09/26/02

HP recently announced two new scanners, a 4.1 megapixel, 8x optical zoom digital camera and a compact photo printer that has an automatic photo feeder. The new feature lets users digitize traditional photos by scanning a stack of 4- by 6-inch or 3- by 5-inch photos into a computer.

HPScanjet5500-small.jpgHP says its Scanjet 5500c (pictured) and 4570c scanners have seven one-touch buttons for access to features such as a "share-to-Web" option. In addition, its Memories Disc Creator software lets users create photo CDs that can be viewed on a PC or DVD player. The scanners can go up to 2,400 dpi and 48-bit color for printing, e-mailing and Internet posting. A lighted adapter is included to let users scan 35mm negatives and slides. The automatic photo feeder is included on the 5500c and optional for the 4750c scanner.

The HP Photosmart 230 photo printer can produce borderless 4- by 6-inch prints up to 4,800 dpi. The printer has a feature to let users preview and edit their photos prior to printing on its 1.8-inch color LCD screen. Printing from a digital camera without connecting to a computer is done via the printer's memory card slots (support for Compact Flash, Memory Stick, MultiMedia, Secure Digital and SmartMedia cards).

The HP Photosmart 850 digital camera is a 4.1 megapixel camera with 56x total zoom (8x optical and 7x digital). The camera includes the HP Instant Share technology, which lets a user take a picture and choose on the camera where the photo will go when the camera is connected to computer or HP's Photosmart 8881 digital camera dock.

All of the products include HP photo and imaging software. The 5500c scanner ($299), 4570c scanner ($199, plus $199 for optional automatic photo feeder), 230 photo printer ($249) and Photosmart 850 digital camera ($499, plus $79.99 for optional docking station) are expected in early October, HP said. The products will be available at HP's Shopping Web site and at national retailers.
