Network World Fusion, 10/16/02

You would think that a company like Research in Motion would wait until their meeting with world-famous Keith Shaw from Network World to announce their new product, but alas, they decided to announce it today instead of our Thursday meeting.

RIM today announced two new BlackBerry handheld devicdes, the Java-based 6710 and BlackBerry6720. The devices include features such as wireless e-mail, voice phone, Short Message Service (SMS), a Web browser and PIM functions (calendar, contacts, etc.).

The 6710 will operate on the GSM/GPRS networks in North America, Europe and Asia/Pacific (900/1900 MHz), RIM says. The 6720 is a dual-band device that will operate on GSM/GPRS networks in Europe and Asia/Pacific (900/1800 MHz).

The devices measure 4.76- by 2.99- by 0.7-inches and weigh about 4.86 oz., RIM says. They also both now include a backlit keyboard, which should make several BlackBerry addicts happy as they can now type out their e-mails in the dark. E-mail features include the same "push" e-mail that RIM is famous for, and the phone features include call waiting, call answer and an integrated speaker/microphone.

No carrier announcements have been made yet (maybe they'll tell me at the meeting on Thursday), and pricing and availability have yet to be determined (as they are made by the carriers).

Head to RIM's Web site for more details on today's announcement.
