Nokia today announced new phones at its Mobile Internet Conference in Munich. The new phones include color displays, Java and Mulitmedia Messaging Service (MMS) capabilities. The new phones include:
The Nokia 6800, which Nokia says is the "first messaging device optimized for efficient text input." The 6800 includes a full keyboard for personal information management, messaging and other text input. The 6800 includes a color display, SyncML support, e-mail support, a stereo FM radio, and Java and MMS support. The dual-band 6800 will ship in Europe, Asia and Africa in Q1 2003, Nokia says.
Update: Nokia announced at Comdex that it has a version of the 6800 that will be available in the U.S., so we here in the States will be able to get the benefits of this phone as well. Nokia said it expects to begin shipments of the phone for the U.S. in Q2 2003. In addition, later versions of the 6800 will include a BlackBerry client (the initial phones will only support POP3/IMAP e-mail), so corporate users will be able to get their Exchange e-mail through the phone.
The Nokia 7250 is a fashion phone that includes an integrated camera (CIF). It also has a color display, MMS support, Java and a stereo FM radio. The tri-band phone will ship globally in Q1 2003.
The 6100 phone is the "world's smallest and lightest" GPRS phone with MMS support, Nokia says. The tri-band (GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900) phone works around the world, and has a streamlined shape. The phone is expected to ship by the end of 2002, Nokia says.
The 5100 is a wearable phone that includes tri-band functionality (EGSM 900/GSM 1800/1900), and includes a color display, Java, and MMS functionality. Shipments begin worldwide in Q1 2003, Nokia says.
The 8910i includes MMS features, Java, and Bluetooth wireless technology. The EGSM 900/1800 phone is expected to ship in Europe, Asia and Africa in Q1 2003.
The Nokia 2100, an entry-level product for voice and text messaging to users in Europe, Africa and Asia. The 2100 is expected to ship in Q1 2003.
Other devices
Nokia launched its Observation Camera, a stand-alone imaging device that lets users request and receive information remotely. Users can send a text message to the Observation Camera, which can be installed in various places, Nokia says. When the device receives the request message, it takes an image and sends it to the mobile phone number or an e-mail address defined in the message. The images are sent as an MMS message. The Observation Camera works in the GSM 900/1800 network coverage area (and in GPRS), and is expected to ship in Q2 2003 in Europe, Asia and Africa.
Nokia also announced a Camera Headset HS-1C, a wearable digital camera and headset attachment for compatible Nokia phone models that include the Nokia Pop-Port interface connector. The headset lets users take digital images and send them as MMS with text, image and/or audio content. The Camera Headset ships worldwide in December 2002.
Nokia said its Music Stand enhancement would let the 7250 phone's built-in radio to be played through stereo speakers, simply by placing the phone into the stand. The Music Stand will also work with the 6800 via its Pop-Port connector. The Music Stand will be available worldwide in Q1 2003.
Finally, Nokia said it would bring mobility to the games industry by offering console-type games for a new "mobile game deck" product category. The games will be distributed on memory cards, Nokia said. Its Nokia N-Gage mobile game deck, with branded game titles from publishers and developers, would be shipping in February 2003, Nokia said.
