Port80 Software launched httpZip, an IIS software module that accelerates Web sites with HTTP compression. Port80 Software says the $299 (per single server) software can transparently compress Web pages up to 98% using encoding algorithms supported by most browsers. The software is aimed at ISPs, hosting providers, corporate data centers and application developers.
The module compresses the page size with the Gzip and Deflate compression algorithms, Port80 said. The module extends the compression by using optional white space removal and other forms of safe HTML and Cascading Style Sheet compression. "Unlike IIS' built-in HTTP compression feature, httpZip selectively encodes content and addresses browser incompatibilities right out of the box," Port80 says.
A stand-alone and MMC-based interface is provided, as well as a COM interface for ASP, .NET and ColdFusion developers. It runs on Windows NT, 2000 and XP with IIS 4.0, 5.0 and 5.1. It is also compatible with third-party server-side scripting platforms, the company says. A free 30-day trial download is available at the Port 80 Web site.
