Network World Fusion, 12/31/02

D-Link recently announced two new products in the 802.11g wireless LAN space. The new products are compliant with the 802.11g draft standard (since the official standard has not been ratified).

DLink80211g-DI624.jpgThe AirPlus Xtreme G products have data rates up to 54M bit/sec in the 2.4GHz frequency range, and will be available in January 2003. The two products available will be the AirPlus Xtreme G DI-624 Wireless Router with 4-Port Switch (pictured), and the AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-G650 Wireless CardBus Adapter (aka PC Card). Based on the Intersil Prism GT chip set, the Xtreme G products combine both 802.11b and 802.11g hardware into each unit, D-Link said. The equipment gives 802.11b and 802.11g clients the ability to transmit their respective data rates, the company said. The products also provide 64- and 128-bit WEP encryption.

The AirPlus Xtreme G DI-624 ($150, $130 street price) includes 4 10/100M bit/sec. ports, and includes firewall security features. It has an embedded DHCP server that can automatically assign IP addresses to wireless clients. It has two high-performance omnidirectional and detachable antennae. Security features include MAC address authentication, Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and Content Filtering. Advanced logging and filtering features give information about intruders to an administrator. Parental control features such as URL blocking, domain blocking and IP address filtering are also included. Configuration is handled through a Web-based interface.

The AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-G650 CardBus Adapter ($80, $70 street price) installs into notebook computers, and includes site survey software that lets users find wireless networks within range. The software also lets users configure and save multiple network site profiles. Go to the D-Link Web site for more details.
