Apple today launched its 17-inch PowerBook G4, which Apple claims is the "world's first notebook with a 17-inch color display." The PowerBook measures 1-inch thick, weighs about 6.8 lbs., and also includes built-in AirPort Extreme 54M bit/sec. 802.11g wireless networking (pre-standard). Apple also announced a 12-inch PowerBook G4, which it says is "its smallest notebook ever."

Apple's 17-inch PowerBook G4 has a wide-screen display.
The 17-inch PowerBook G4 also includes high-speed FireWire 800, a backlit keyboard with ambient light sensors, and built-in Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Apple says the 17-inch screen can display a 1,440 by 900 pixel resolution in a widescreen 16:10 aspect ratio. The laptop runs on a 1GHz PowerPC G4 processor, and includes an Nvidia graphics card. The laptop includes two powered FireWire ports, (one FireWire 400 and one FireWire 800 port), as well as built-in Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000). It has 1M byte of level 3 cache and 512M bytes of DDR memory. The PowerBook G4 will cost $3,299 and is expected to be available in February through Apple's Web site, Apple retailers and resellers.

The 12-inch PowerBook G4 has a 867MHz PowerPC G4 processor with Velocity Engine and offers 256M bytes of DDR RAM (expandable to 640M bytes). It also has an Nvidia GeForce4 420 Go graphics processor with 32M bytes of video memory. The device measures over 1-inch thin and weighs about 4.6 lbs., Apple says. Its 12-inch screen has a 1,024 by 768 pixel resolution, and built-in Bluetooth for wireless connection to cell phones and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. The 12-inch PowerBook G4 will be available by the end of this month for $1,799.
