Online chat is very popular, but it never seemed to make the jump from text-based chatting to a more graphical online "world." Several companies and sites have tried to create sites where users can create "avatars" to represent themselves, but these never gained as much traction as text-based chat.
There Inc. hopes to change that with its new online communication and entertainment platform. The "There" platform is a three-dimensional world that lets people hang out with friends online, create personalized avatars, and explore and shape the online "world." There announced a free public beta test at the show for users interested in trying it out.
What interested me was not just the use of avatars and chat features, but the world includes activities that let you do more than just chat. For example, users can race around the world on dune buggies, or go exploring on "hoverboards." There also said the online world is accessible on computers that only have a 56K bit/sec. modem. Users with broadband connections can try additional features, such as adding voice over IP so chatters can actually "chat" with others instead of typing.
There was at the show looking to spark interest from developers who can help customize the world and create other activities.
