Apple this week announced new Power Mac G4 computers that include a single 1Ghz, dual 1.25GHz or dual 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 processors. Prices on the computers range from $1,499 up to $2,699. Apple says the computers include FireWire 800 and internal support for 54M bit/sec. AirPort Extreme (802.11g pre-standard) and Bluetooth wireless networking.
The new Power Mac G4 line is based on Apple's Xserve architecture, and includes 2M bytes of DDR Level 3 cache and 333 MHz DDR memory, Apple says. The computers have five slots for expansion, including four 64-bit 33 MHz PCI slots and two external drive bays for optical drives. Apple said its SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) drive lets customers record DVDs, CD-R and CD-RW disks at twice the speed of previous models. Apple says it also has a faster Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) drive for watching DVDs and burning CDs (at twice the speed of before). The PowerMac offers hard drive space in either 60G-, 80G-, 120G- or 180G-byte options.
The new Power Mac G4 includes Apple's FireWire 800 port, which it says is the next generation of its high-speed serial interface. The device also has two FireWire 400 ports and four USB 1.1 ports. Graphics options include the ATI Radeon 9000 Pro or NVIDIA GeForce4 MX (which both include 64M bytes of DDR SDRAM graphics memory and dual display support). Other graphics card options include the NVIDIA GeForce4 Titanium and the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (which include 128M-bytes of DDR SDRAM).
Software bundled on the devices include Apple's new iSync software (to synchronize address books and calendars between macs and Bluetooth-enabled cell phones), iTunes (digital music software), iPhoto (digital photo software), iMovie (digital movie making) and iDVD (DVD burning software, on the SuperDrive models only). Business and productivity software is also included, Apple said.
The 1GHz Power Mac G4 costs $1,499; the dual 1.25GHz PowerMac G4 costs $1,999. These models are available in the U.S. now, Apple said. The dual 1.42GHz Power Mac G4 costs $2,699, and will be available next month. Go to the Apple Web site for more details.
