Network World Fusion, 01/31/03

StarNet Communications Corp. recently showed off its X-Win32 X server software and turned a Tablet PC into a wireless Unix workstation. At the DesignCon 2003 in Santa Clara this week, the company had an HP/Compaq Tablet PC wirelessly connected to a Sun Solaris server running electronic design applications, the company said.

The X-Win32 software lets the tablet access individual X applications or bring up a full Unix or Linux desktop from a server (or networked servers), StarNet said. Examples of tablets using a Unix server include health care staffs using a tablet to access X-rays, patient data and other databases that reside on local Unix servers, or automotive engineers accessing CAD schematics from a Unix mainframe while working on a prototype vehicle away, the company said.

The X-Win32 software costs $245, with volume discounts available, StarNet said. A free trial license is available from the StarNet Web site.
