Sharp announced it was now shipping the new version of its Zaurus Linux-based PDA, the SL-5600. The new model features expanded battery life, memory and wireless expandability. The PDA costs $499 through VARs and online retailers, Sharp said.
The device includes an integrated keyboard that has a sliding cover, and includes a replaceable 1700 mAh battery, 64M bytes of protected flash memory, 32M bytes of SDRAM, and Compact Flash and Secure Digital / MultiMedia Card slots. The device runs on an Intel XScale 400MHz processor, Sharp said.
Wireless connectivity for the device would be handled through the PDA's Compact Flash or SD/MMC expansion slot. Sharp said these slots will support high-speed connectivity (GPRS and 1xRTT) later this year.
The device supports Java applications through the Insignia Solutions Jeode Java virtual machine environment, Sharp said. Jeode is compatible with the PersonalJava specification, 1.2 class libraries and optional classes, Sharp said. Go to www.myzaurus.com or www.sharpusa.com for more details.
