Verizon Wireless announced today that its new high-speed wireless network, based on the CDMA 1xEV-DO technology, would be launched in Washington, D.C. and San Diego in Q3 2003. The company also announced Wi-Fi service nationwide.
The EV-DO service offers speeds up to 2.4M bit/sec., Verizon said. The Wi-Fi service would be available at "hundreds of hot spots" across the country, the company added. The Wi-Fi service, also set to begin in Q3 2003, would provide connection between the hot spots and Verizon's wireless WAN. Verizon is teaming up with Wayport to provide this service.
To access the network, users will need to purchase 1xEV-DO devices, which Verizon said it would sell. Devices include PCMCIA cards (PC Cards), modems and other mobile devices.
On a more personal note, Verizon was demoing the 1xEV-DO technology at the show -- they provided me with a PC Card in order to test out the service. Check this space for more details on how the experience goes.
