Network World Fusion, 04/28/03

Proxim today announced a new 802.11 a/b/g combination PC Card that will be able to connect to any flavor of Wi-Fi network (802.11a, b or g). The Gold ComboCard (for enterprise users) costs $110. For home and small office users who don’t need the additional profiles or power levels offered by the Gold Card, a Silver ComboCard costs $89.

abg_ComboCard_gold.jpgThe product line also includes the IEEE 802.11d “World Mode” standard that lets the card automatically configure itself to any local wireless standard, Proxim said. The cards are compatible with Proxim’s AP-2000 and AP-600 enterprise-level access points, as well as other Wi-Fi certified access points, the company said. In 802.11g mode, the card has been tested with access points that contain the Atheros, Broadcom and Intersil silicon, the company added.

The card comes with a utility (the ORiNOCO Client Utility) that lets users manage and update wireless network and security profiles, Proxim said. In addition, users of the Gold ComboCard can adjust power levels to help enhance security and bandwidth in crowded areas. Security support includes “all standards-based wireless networking authentication,” as well as the new Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) technology. Once the WPA standard is certified, users will be able to upgrade their card via free download, Proxim said.
