Toshiba's Digital Products Division this week launched two new notebooks -- the Satellite M35-S456 Special Edition (a lightweight wireless notebook) and the Tecra A2 series.
Aimed at consumers, students and gamers, the 6.2-pound M35 Special Edition ($1,999) includes TruBrite screen technology (brighter images than standard wide-screen LCD screens), and a new video engine that provides TV-quality video on a notebook screen (higher contrast, brighter colors and smoother motion), Toshiba said. The notebook also includes a composite video in port, which lets users hook up a gaming console (Xbox, Playstation 2, etc.), camcorder, etc. It also features SRS WOW and TruSurround XT technology and harmon/kardon stereo speakers.
Other features include the Intel Pentium M processor 735, an 802.11b/g wireless LAN connection, an 80G-byte hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 video card with 64M bytes of memory, 512M bytes of DDR SDRAM, a 15.4-inch WXGA display, DVD Super Multi drive (supports both +/- formats and DVD-RAM), i.Link (IEEE 1394) port, Secure Digital slot, integrated V.92 modem and 10/100 Ethernet port, four USB ports and an S-Video out slot.
The notebook also includes a trial version of Napster's downloading software, Toshiba's PC Diagnostic (troubleshooting) and ConfigFree, which lets users locate wired and wireless communication problems. The system runs Microsoft XP Home Edition, and includes Office OneNote and Microsoft Works software.
The Tecra A2 (click to see photo) notebook is aimed as an affordable mobile alternative to a traditional corporate desktop, Toshiba said. The Tecra A2 includes the ConfigFree software to help set up a wireless LAN quickly, and is compatible with Toshiba's Advanced Port Replicator III.
