Logitech today announced the next generation of its diNovo Media Dekstop (click link for a picture), a system that provides a control center for digital media through a keyboard, mouse and remote control. The system will be available next month in the U.S. for $249, Logitech says.

The new version includes an enhanced MediaPad, which serves as the remote control for users to enjoy music, photos and videos stored on a PC. The MediaPad now supports MusicMatch Internet Radio, iTunes, Windows Media Player 9 and Winamp 5. In addition, the MediaPad supports Yahoo Messenger 6, MSN Messenger 6, MSN Hotmail and Yahoo Mail. The device can also control applications on Windows XP Media Center devices. Also included is Logitech's MediaLife software, which combines music tracks, digital pictures and videos into a single interface.

The new system also shows a 25% improvement in battery life because of Bluetooth 1.2 support, Logitech says. The system also has an estimated 50% reduction in latency, resulting in faster connectivity and smoother performance, the company added. Version 1.2 of Bluetooth uses adaptive frequency hopping, which minimizes interference with wireless LAN (802.11b/g) networks. Having Bluetooth 1.2 on the system also adds to interoperability of mobile phones that support Bluetooth 1.2.

Users of the first generation of the diNovo system can upgrade to the new version beginning in December 2004 for no charge at the Logitech Bluetooth Web site. However, only the new system will support the Bluetooth 1.2 specification, Logitech says.
