Network World Fusion, 11/12/04

MagPix this week announced its third generation digital camera / binocular (click link to see larger picture), a $150 device that includes a 3.1 megapixel digital camera to take photos while you're doing things like watching birds or a football game.

MAGPIX_SX3_Digital_Camera_Binocular-sm.jpgThe SX3 offers up to 10x optical magnification through its 10 x 25mm ruby-coated lenses, MagPix said. With its lens focusing system, the SX3 lets users take pictures from about 45 feet away up to infinity. A Light Guide attachment lets users take photos in bright daylight and at great distances, the company added. The system also has an automatic shutter speed of up to 1/8000 seconds.

The system includes a tripod mount for fixed viewing, and has a TV-out connection that turns the device into a surveillance tool, or to just view photos on a TV. It includes 16M-bytes of internal flash memory, but also has a Secure Digital / MultiMedia Card slot for additional capacities. The SX3 is now available at the Magpix Web site, Home Shopping Network or Wal-Mart.

While it says: "The SX3 offers up to 10x optical magnification through its 10 x 25mm ruby-coated lenses...", it's just plain wrong. It should say" "The SX3 offers FIXED 10x optical magnification ..."

There is no zoom capability at all. You get 10x like it or not.

I'm not so sure that's a bad thing. That's pretty much the way binoculars work. Misleading description aside, this seems to be the first device like this that is multi-megapixel. Am I missing something?
