Network World Fusion, 01/21/03

Wyse Technology today launched the Wyse Winterm 3820 TX, a tablet thin client device to help expand thin clients from beyond the desktop realm, the company said.

Wyse3820tablet-sm.jpgThe Winterm 3820 TX is based on Windows CE, and is managed by Wyse's Rapport thin-client management software, which lets IT staff manage all the thin clients from a centralized location. The tablet has wireless connectivity, and is aimed at employees who are more mobile (such as a warehouse or campus environment), the company said. The device has a 12.1-inch LCD touch screen, handwriting recognition (CalliGrapher), a virtual keyboard, and embedded support for Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol 5.0 and Citrix ICA. It has 32M bytes of internal memory, and has an optional 8-hour battery that lets users avoid having to recharge or carry around extra batteries. The device costs $1,500.

The thin-client nature of the device means that data and software are stored on the server, not the device, Wyse said. The Wyse Rapport software includes features such as software distribution, device diagnostics, device configuration and asset management. For more details, go to the Wyse Web site.

I am lookoing for suggestions for a portable wireless (Wi-Fi) internet access device that would be shared by several users in an enterprise setting. The memory woudl be purged between users and the devidce woufdl be rendered useless if it was taken beyond the work area.

A tablet sized device would be prefered. No other appications woudl be required. Please share your oppinions.

Thank you - DJ
