Network World Fusion, 04/15/03

Zone Labs this week announced ZoneAlarm Pro 4.0, the latest version of its Internet security product for PCs.

The new version will be available next month, and includes new features that help users of different skill levels configure the software. Other features include anti-hacker and anti-spyware tools to help fight the latest vulnerabilities, the company says. The new version includes Hacker ID, which lets members of the “Zone Labs community” to track attacks on their PCs and report offenders to the appropriate ISP.

Other features and additions to the version 4.0 include:

  • Outbound MailSafe, which monitors outgoing e-mail for activity that might indicate virus infestation. Zone Labs says this feature helps prevent users from sending out virus-infected e-mails to others.

  • Cache Cleaner, which clears the PC’s hard disk and browser caches to protect a user’s privacy and surfing habits. The utility also helps free up hard disk space, Zone Labs said. The tool can be scheduled to run automatically if the user wishes. The Hard Drive Cleaner removes temporary files, search history, recycle bin files and other “file clutter” from the PC; the Browser Cleaner gets rid of browser-related files, including cache, URL history, cookies and page caches.

Other features include improved firewall controls, increased “hacker-proofing”, automatic VPN configuration, optimized ad blocking (pop-up ads), and protection against third-party “spyware.” The software, expected in the second quarter 2003, supports Windows 98, SE, ME, NT, 2000 and XP. The software will be available for download at the Zone Labs Web site.
