Network World Fusion, 05/09/03

Axis Communications today announced three new print servers that have USB features -- the OfficeBasic USB, the AXIS 5500 and the AXIS 5550. The print servers connect any printer to a network, letting companies manage printers across the network, Axis said. The USB port on the servers are aimed at replacing a standard serial or parallel interface.

AXIS OfficeBasic USB.jpgThe AXIS 5500 and 5550 let users control all the printers in a network from a single workstation, and to print "from almost any application," the company said. The 5550 also offers both USB and parallel ports for printing in mixed network environments. Print management tools and multi-language interfaces are included. The OfficeBasic USB print server is aimed at smaller offices and LANs.

The print servers will be available by the end of May, Axis said. The OfficeBasic costs $99; the 5500 costs $190 and the 5550 costs $215. Go to the Axis Web site for more details.

I'm looking for a USB print server that can properly operate a "multi function" printer. I've looked your site over pretty thoroughly and it seems that you have gone out of your way to say nothing about multi function printers.
Could you shed a little light on it?

Dear Howard Allen,

I am looking for a similar solution.

Edimax will be releasing a USB print server that will work with multi-functional printers in the next few months (or so I'm told).

Model number PS-1205MF

Data sheet can be found at

Keyspan has a USB Server product that will work with multi function printers. A bit pricey, but I found it at Buy.com for $85.
