Nextel this week announced its new Nationwide Direct Connect service, a wireless “walkie-talkie” service that lets users talk to each other across the country. Nextel said about half of the markets supported by Nextel and Nextel Partners will be able to use this service by June 16.
The first markets for the new service include New England, Florida and southern California, Nextel said. Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Virginia, the Pacific Northwest, northern California and Atlanta are expected to have service by June 16. Nextel customers in these markets will be able to connect to any other Nextel users within those markets simply by pushing a button on their phones. Nextel says that when the nationwide rollout is complete, the walkie-talkie communication feature will span more than 5,000 miles.
Options for the new service include unlimited Nationwide Direct Connect for $10 per month, unlimited Nationwide Direct Connect plus two-way text messaging for $15 per month, or pay-as-you-go pricing. Go to the Nextel Web site for more details.
I have no idea what the advantage of "walkie talkie" is.I can push a button on my 3 yr old sell phone and connect instantly. Looks like just some more nonsence to sell the public. I mean you still have to look up a name to punch it in.
Posted by: DJ McQueen on June 21, 2003 01:08 PMThis is great! It's better than a cellphone. You and a friend who lives far away can each just turn on your walkie talkie and it's like when you were a kid and you talk to your friend next door with a walkie talkie.
Posted by: Eman on June 29, 2003 09:32 PMTHIS IS SOO COOL I GOT A BOOSTMOBILE PHONE AND IT HAS AWSOME FEATURES. MOST ESPECIALLY I LIKE THE MOST IS THE DIRECT CONNECT SERVICE. ITS WAY CHEAPER THAN MAKING CELL PHONE CALLS WHICH IS 25 CENTS A MINUTE AND FOR 4 MINUTES THATS A DOLLAR. WHEN USING THE WALKIE TALKIE I PAY 1 BUCK FOR A DAY UNLIMITED USE ITS SOO COOL AND SAVES MY MONEY. I CAN TALK TO THE WHOLE UNITED STATES IF I KNOW THERE WALKIE TALKIE NUMBER WHICH I JUST PUSH RANDOM ONES TO GET OTHERS IN OTHER STATES AND IT WORKS ITS COOL. I HOPE AND CANT WAIT UNTIL AND IF THEY GO WORLDWIDE. HEY IF ANY1 WANTS TO BUG ME MY 2WAY IS 126*61*3744

Posted by: Roger Robert Bainbridge on December 7, 2003 08:41 PMDirectConnect is the best thing since sliced bread IF you're in the same region. Otherwise the charges are outrageously ridiculous! Futhermore, Nextel doesn't provide detailed billing as with regular airtime usage. And, after reviewing my statement and DC usage, I feel that I am being (inaccurately) overcharged. Because of DC charges in previous months I made it a point NOT to initiate any DC calls, however I am still ending up with unexplanable DC billing! I called in and spoke with a CS rep about the charges. I was told that if the recipient does not respond to the alert within 6 seconds the charges flip and the recipient becomes the initiator and therfore absorbs the charges. I could not find this explanation anywhere on the Nextel website. The only info regarding charges is that ONLY the initiator is charged for DC usage. I feel that Nextel is mis-representing their service in not explicitly spelling out this info and by not detailing the DC billing!
As a convert from Sprint PCS, I had been very pleased with Nextel up until this point. Additionally, I am disappointed that in the wake of their 'nationwide' DC capabilities that they still even have 'regions'!
