Network World Fusion, 06/05/03

I think I’ve got the first item on this year’s Christmas list. Archos announced this week availability (North America) of its Video AV300 Series Video Recorder / Player. The AV300 is a handheld device that can record and play back movies from “any video source,” Archos said.

Archos-PVR-AV300-sm.jpgVideo content can be recorded from any video source, TV or VCR, the company said. MPEG-4 video files can also be downloaded onto the device from a computer. Video saved to the device can be played back on the device’s 3.8-inch color LCD screen or output to a TV or PC. The device has two models, with 20G bytes of storage (40 hours of video) or 40G bytes (up to 80 hours of video). In addition, the device can play MP3 audio files and view JPEG images through its Photo Viewer. The device also has a built-in microphone that lets you record voice.

Archos is also providing add-ons modules to the device, including a 3.3 megapixel digital camcorder (with zoom lens), an FM radio with remote control, and memory card readers for importing photos directly to the device. For computer users, the device comes with a USB 2.0 cable, with FireWire as an option.

The device is now available at retailers, as well as the Archos Web site. The AV320 (20G bytes) costs $569.95; the AV340 (40G bytes) costs $629.95. The add-on camcorder (AVCam300) costs $199.95; the FM tuner costs $29.95. Memory card readers (Compact Flash, Memory Stick & MultiMedia Card, or SmartMedia) cost $29.95 each.
