SMC this week launched a new wireless Ethernet Adapter that lets users provide wireless LAN (802.11b) connectivity to devices with an Ethernet port (including an Xbox, Playstation 2 or music devices). The SMC2671W is part of SMC’s EZ Connect family of wireless products.
The device, which costs $99 and will be available by the end of this month, can also serve as a wireless range extender. The box can communicate in ad hoc mode (peer to peer) or in infrastructure mode, where it connects to an access point. Security features include support for 64- and 128-bit WEP encryption, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), MAC address filtering and the ability to disable the SSID broadcast. The Range Extender mode lets the SMC2671W to extend the coverage area of a wireless network. SMC says the box can forward the wireless signal between a wireless client and a wireless router connected to a wired network.
