Network World Fusion, 06/18/03

These days, before a technology trade show begins there is usually a media/analyst event that highlights new products and technologies from companies. At the CeBit America show, this is no exception.

At last night’s Digital Experience, I mingled with other “journalists” and got to see some new cool stuff, including:

  • A new SDIO (Secure Digital I/O) wireless LAN (802.11b) card from ViewSonic that works with its V37 Pocket PC.

  • A new Bluetooth headset for mobile phones from Logitech set to be launched in August. A Logitech spokeswoman said the headset would offer up to 7.5 hours of talk time and up to two weeks in standby mode before needing a recharge. Logitech was also showing off some new cordless mice (including a very nice $39 notebook cordless mouse), as well as some computer headphones/headsets.

  • A sneak peek at some new notebooks from HP, including a wide-screen notebook that may rival Apple’s widescreen notebook. More on that later in the week after HP debuts the devices (they had it “gift wrapped” at their booth).

  • The Fujitsu ScanSnap, a small desktop scanner that lets users convert paper documents into Adobe PDF files. The company said the scanner can covert documents into digital images, as well as scan both sides of a page, at about 15 documents per minute. The scanner can also recognize whether a document is black and white, or color.

  • Comedian Gallagher, who was seen eating at one of the tables. It was unclear why he was at the show, but he was too busy talking to others, so I didn’t get a chance to speak with him. No watermelons were seen in the vicinity. First Morgan Fairchild (at this year’s CES press event), now Gallagher.
