Sony this week announced the PEGA-CC5, a car cradle accessory for the CLIE handheld PDA (compatible with PEG-NX80V, NX73V and TG50 models) that adds Global Positioning System and audio output features. The cradle will be available at the end of this month for about $300, Sony said.
The PEGA-CC5 has a bundled GPS antenna that lets users display the car’s location and direction of movement through the PDA’s screen. A special version of the Rand McNally StreetFinder Travel Navigation software will come bundled with the cradle. The cradle plugs into a cigarette lighter socket for power, and will also recharge the PDA’s internal battery.
The audio output feature allows a user to plug in a Memory Stick card and transmits the music to the car’s audio speakers through an FM transmitter on the cradle (95.9 – 101.9 MHz). Music can also be played through an optional line-out cassette adapter, or the Sony Bus Connection Adaptor Output accessories (which work with compatible Sony car stereo head units that have the Changer Control feature). The cradle also supports a “text to voice” feature that reads back e-mail stored in the CLIE Mail application, as well as appointments stored into the Palm Schedule application, Sony said.
Pre-orders of the cradle are being taken at the Sony CLIE Web site.
