FirewireDirect.com this week launched the Ultra III 800, the newest of its 3.5-inch desktop hard drives that use the FireWire 800 interface. Also known as 1394b, FireWire 800 has data rates up to 800M bit/sec., appealing to digital video and audio enthusiasts, the company said.

The Ultra III 800 users the Oxford 922 FireWire 800 chip, and has dual USB 2.0 and FireWire interface. The system installs without any special drivers, and includes formatting software for Windows and Macintosh, FirewireDirect.com said. Storage capabilities are up to 320G-bytes.

Another drive, the StingRay 800, was recently announced, which also includes a USB 2.0 interface. For more information on the new drives, go to the FirewireDirect.com Web site.
