Mobility creates 'always on' people

Network World Fusion, 09/18/03

DEMOmobile Executive Producer Chris Shipley introduced the concept of “always on” people during her keynote session to open the show. As technology improvements help people be connected to routers, servers and networks that are “always on,” Shipley argued that society in general will become “always on.”

Mobile and wireless technology will not necessarily extend the world of work and play, but will blend them, Shipley said. “Forget 9 to 5: Work will happen when it needs to happen,” she said. “Family life will not be about Leave it To Beaver,” but will happen when that needs to happen.

Mobile and wireless technology not only will drive the way we work, but will change working features such as retirement, vacation policy, tax laws, etc., Shipley said.

It's an interesting concept. In fact, right here at the show, I'm working by weblogging at the show, listening to the demos and staying in contact with co-workers and friends via instant messaging. A few years ago we'd be lucky to be connected during one of these shows. Writing reports from the show usually involved taking a lot of notes and then running to the press room where the fast network was. Now, with Wi-Fi, faster notebooks, IM clients and Weblogging, I'm multitasking much more efficiently.
