Network World Fusion, 11/17/03

One of my meetings today was with Buffalo Technology, which announced a $59 (street price) print server that connects to a USB printer and Ethernet network to provide printer capabilities for households or small businesses that want to print without having a printer dedicated to a single PC.

The Network USB Print Server (LPV2-USB-TX1) features a USB 1.1 port and a 10/100 Ethernet port, and installs via a Web-based management interface. Support for the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) is available on the device. The device will be available in January 2004, Buffalo officials said.

That's what I've been looking for, for over a year now. The HP print servers usually only run parallel and cost over 150 USD. Now if I want to share a printer, I have to turn on the computer that controls it.

Does it come with a USB cable? that seems to be the new thing for printer makers to leave out of the box, and could add $25 to the price if bought seperately.

while it is definitely a cheap move to not include a USB cable, it would be ridiculous to pay $25 for one. CompUSA or other major retailers may charge that much, but I have bought them for $3.99 at several local vendors. Retail price is only intended for people that are not familiar with the products.

i've been wanting one of these for Mac OSX, the only one i've seen is from IOGEAR:

but they say it only works on OSX with postscript printers

look forward to seeing the Buffalo product.

I spoke with the Buffalo officials, they said a USB cable (and Ethernet cable) will be included for the same $59 price. Defintely looks like this is a bargain.
