IBM and Fujitsu this week launched new notebooks. The IBM model is geared towards mobile business workers, while the Fujitsu notebook shoots for home notebook users.
IBM announced a redesigned version of its x40 ThinkPad notebook, promising up to 7.5 hours of battery life (10 hours with an optional extended battery) and its new Rapid Restore software, which aims to restore a system at the touch of a button.
The x40 weighs 2.7 pounds, and includes an 8-cell system battery for the 7.5-hours of life. Other new features include the ability to connect to a ThinkPad X4 UltraBase Dock, the Rapid Restore software and the Active Protection System, which guards against data loss when the notebook is dropped. On certain models, the notebooks supports Cisco Compatible Extensions on a Cisco wireless network (password protection and dynamic encryption).
The systems include either a 1.0 or 1.2GHz Intel Ultra Low Voltage Pentium 4 processor, 12.1-inch TFT XGA (1,024 by 768 resolution), a 20G-byte or 40G-byte hard drive, up to 1G bytes of DDR SDRAM, an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 card, a Gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN support, Bluetooth, two USB 2.0 ports, a Secure Digital expansion slot and PC Card slot. More details are available here.
Fujitsu Computer Systems launched the latest version of its LifeBook N5000 series, which now include built-in 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN options, and a faster desktop-class processor. The N5000 is aimed at home users, the company said.
The N5000 includes an Intel Pentium 4 3.0 or 3.2GHz processor with Hyper-Threading Technology support, an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics chip with 64M bytes of video memory, and a 16-inch SXGA+ Crystal View display with a 600:1 contrast ratio and 350 nits of brightness. The Crystal View function aims to bring CRT-like qualities to LCD screens, Fujitsu said.
Other features include a DVD-RW drive, an 80G-byte hard drive, and up to 2G bytes of DDR system memory. Expansion ports include a Memory Stick and Secure Digital slot, two PC Card (Type I or II) slots (or one Type III slot), four USB 2.0 ports, an IEEE 1394 port, Ethernet and modem ports, and an S-video output port for an external monitor. The notebook weighs 10.34 pounds, and comes pre-installed with a choice of Windows XP Home Edition or XP Professional. Pricing starts at $2,099 for a configuration that includes the DVD-RW drive, Fujitsu said. Go to the Fujitsu Computers Web site for more details.
