Dell this week launched the Inspiron XPS, a gaming notebook that will include an upgradeable graphics option for future graphics engine updates. The notebook starts at $2,849 and is available now through the Dell Web site (www.dell4me.com/xps). Three color kit options (Cipher, at left) are available for users to personalize their machines. Other colors include the Skullz (black and white with skull-and-bones) and Plasma (red and black).
The notebook includes an Intel Pentium 4 (3.4GHz) or Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (3.4GHz) processor, and the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card with 128M bytes of memory. The system also includes a subwoofer, integrated digital video input port, Gigabit Ethernet port, four USB 2.0 ports, an IEEE 1394 port and a choice of either a 60G-byte or 80G-byte hard drive. Other features include optional integrated 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN connectivity, optional Bluetooth, a DVD+RW/+R optical drive, 512M bytes of DDR RAM (upgradeable to 2G bytes), a PC Card slot, S-video Out port, and optional second hard drive or floppy disk drive.
The graphics card upgrade option works like this -- when upgrades become available later, a Dell technician will install the upgrade at the customer's home, eliminating the need to send the system back to Dell, the company said.
