Network World Fusion, 02/16/04

The morning session included a panel debating the usefulness and excitement surrounding Weblogging, with panelists touting the "wave of the future" that blogging will bring, not only for personal usage, but for internal and external communications for businesses.

After the debate, several companies demonstrated some of their new blogging-related products, including:

  • Six Apart, which was showing its new TypePad application that also includes features for "moblogging," (aka mobile blogging) through the use of camera phones with audio capabilities.
  • SilkRoad Technology, which showed some "enterprise blog" software to let different teams of groups collaborate with each other (including sending alerts) through the power of blogging software.
  • Oddpost, which showed off its NewsDash software, a Web-based RSS aggregator that aims to make RSS subscriptions easier to subscribe to. It was very plug-and-play, drag-and drop cool.
  • Wavemarket's WaveBlog, which adds location and time features to the concept of blogging.
  • Feedster, a weblog/RSS feed search engine that aims to do for weblogging what Google did for Web searching.

All of the demos were impressive (although the WaveMarket demo focused too much on consumer usage instead of business benefits). Fans of blogging will definitely get a kick out of some of the new products launched.

Some of the news aggregators and search engine software reminded me of the "push technology" craze in the late '90s, where all sorts of information would be collected from around the Web and sent to a user's desktop. Although none of the demonstrators used the word "push" in their presentations, there was the feeling that all of this new information would be delivered to a desktop (mostly through a Web browser).

Of course, with blogging being such a hot topic, there are plenty of people blogging the show (yours truly via this site). Even the Demo show has its own official blog, and is inviting people to post to it during the event. Check out the site here.
