Network World Fusion, 04/07/04

Motion Computing today launched its third-generation Tablet PC, the M1400, with new features such as fingerprint biometric security, a display with a wider viewing angle, integrated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and one of the new Intel Pentium M 1.1GHz Ultra Low Voltage processors. Models start at $1,999, and are available now, the company said.

MotionM1400-hands-sm.jpgThe slate-based tablet is geared toward vertical applications and scenarios, including the health care, government, filed sales/service and education markets, Motion Computing officials said.

The M1400 also includes Intel's PRO/Wireless 2200 BG 802.11 card (802.11b/g), an Intel 855GME chipset, 256M bytes of 333MHz DDR memory (upgradeable now to 2G bytes), a 12.1-inch XGA TFT display with wider viewing angles (very helpful when showing the tablet off in a conference room setting), hard drives of 20G-bytes, 40G-bytes or 60G-bytes, and integrated Ethernet, IEEE 1394 (aka FireWire) and USB 2.0 ports. Optional accessories include a USB keyboard, desktop stand and hardtop cover.

The tablet weighs about 3 pounds, and offers on average about four hours of battery life on a standard battery, Motion Computing said. An extended battery that can be "warm swapped" into the tablet can provide another four hours, giving workers a full day of usage. Another power-saving feature is a new "ambient light sensor," which automatically measures the surrounding light and then adjusts the tablet's brightness.

Another interesting feature is its Speak Anywhere audio system, which provides dual microphones on the tablet to improve recording for dictation or other audio situations. The Speak Anywhere system includes software that features noise and echo cancellation to help eliminate background noise. It's "beam forming" feature lets users create a "cone of sound" that directs the tablet the direction in which to record audio (users can choose a narrow, medium or wide focus depending on the situation).

The embedded fingerprint reader not only allows users to log into the system with their fingerprint, but can also be used to remember Web-based passwords, as well as to encrypt and decrypt files. Users can also use the fingerprint sensor to secure the system's BIOS and hard disk drive, Motion Computing said.

Motion has also added two new applications to the $34.99 Motion Pak software bundle. This includes xThink Calculator, a calculator that lets users conduct handwritten computations, and Alias SketchBook Pro, a paint-style application that also lets users annotate drawings and collaborate with others. Other applications in the Motion Pak include Microsoft's OneNote 2003, Virtual Drive, Microsoft Reader, Colligo and Streets and Trips, Motion said.

For more details on the new tablet, go to the Motion Computing Web site. The M1400 includes a standard one-year warranty that can be extended to two or three years. The M1400 is also compatible with accessories made for its earlier models, the M1200 and M1300.
